When to Book Holiday Lighting!

Large stone home outlined in warm white Christmas lights along every roofline at dusk

Every year, the first cold front hits San Angelo and the same thing happens: everyone remembers the Christmas lights at once. Ladders come out, tangled strands come down from the attic, and somebody ends up on a two-story roofline in the wind.

There's an easier way. Here's what to know about professional holiday lighting, and when to get on the schedule.

When should you book?

Earlier than you think. Holiday lighting crews work through a fixed number of homes between early November and mid-December. Most homeowners want their lights up by Thanksgiving weekend, so those install dates fill first.

A good rule: if you want lights up by Thanksgiving, call by the start of November. If you're flexible on install date, there's often room into early December.

What professional installation includes

Our full-service holiday lighting includes:

  • Design. A plan for your roofline, trees, shrubs and walkways that fits your home's shape.
  • Commercial-grade lights. Brighter, more durable bulbs and wiring than most store-bought strands.
  • Custom-fit installation. Lights cut and clipped to the exact length of each roofline, with no sagging strands or extension cords across the lawn.
  • Timers. Lights come on and go off automatically every night.
  • Service calls. If a section goes out mid-season, the crew comes back to fix it.
  • Takedown and storage. After the season, everything comes down and we store it until next year, so you never store a single strand.

No big up-front investment. Ascend keeps a large inventory of commercial-grade lights and supplies them as part of our installation service. We own and maintain the lights, so you don't have to buy them. The only extra charge is a one-time cut fee the first year, which covers the labor of measuring, cutting and fitting lights to your home.

Why pros take it down too

We get this question a lot: why not leave the lights up all year? Holiday lighting is built for seasonal display. Left up year-round in West Texas sun and wind, wiring turns brittle and bulbs fade from UV. Clips loosen and can damage shingles and gutters. Taking lights down after the season keeps your home looking sharp and the lights working when they go back up.

Safety: the real reason to hire it out

Falls from ladders send thousands of people to emergency rooms every year, and holiday decorating is one of the most common reasons homeowners climb. Two-story rooflines, steep pitches and windy December afternoons make it worse. Professional crews bring the right ladders and equipment, and they're experienced working at heights most homeowners find uncomfortable.

Light up more than the roof

Some of the best displays aren't on the house at all:

  • Wrapped trunks and branches on live oaks and crape myrtles
  • Lit shrubs and hedges along the front beds
  • Pathway lights leading to the front door
  • Wreaths and garland on columns, gates and entryways, finished with red velvet bows for that holiday touch
